Travel insurance when backpacking

By Mui Aponta

Taking time out to go travelling is something a lot of us dream about and usually there are two ways this comes about. Firstly, you could be taking a gap year after school or secondly, taking a career break with or without a recent redundancy payment. It is vital to ensure that you are insured properly because should the unexpected occur, you will be grateful for the cover. For people who will be away for several months, standard travel insurance policies will not be relevant for them and historically this has been an area of difficulty: most policies only allow cover for up to 90 days at best.

Recently, the unique requirements of backpackers and long term travellers have been recognised in the form of specialist backpackers’ insurance. Companies understand that backpackers and other similar travellers often visit areas out of the mainstream, such as places where healthcare facilities are basic and limited at best; there may also be more risk attached to your personal belongings going missing if the area you visit is renowned for its crime statistics.

A good backpacking travel insurance policy will contain most of the usual features you would expect of a standard multi trip deal but with the added advantage being that you are covered specifically for travelling over the long term; if you are visiting areas off the beaten track, you will enjoy the peace of mind knowing you are insured.

You should nonetheless remember that any pre existing medical conditions should be declared when taking out a backpackers’ policy. It can be tempting to try and reduce your premiums by failing to do so, but in the event you had to make a claim, the whole policy could be made invalid. For backpackers, the need to declare existing health conditions is of particular importance because as explained above, they may be visiting areas where healthcare is somewhat basic.

If you are intending on backpacking across Europe, you should take out a European Health Identity Card (EHIC). These is your right and is free, entitling you to free basic healthcare in EU countries but bear in mind the health systems in other states may not cover you for anything more than the most limited of procedures, which is why you need extra travel insurance cover in place.

One advantage of backpackers travel insurance is that most policies are designed to cover you also when you are working ? insurers again recognise this unique requirement of backpackers. So if you injured yourself while grape picking or working in a bar, for example, the insurance would pay out to help you get better.

It makes a lot of sense to have complete peace of mind while away on holiday, and by choosing the right travel insurance policy for your requirements such as backpacking, you can go a long way towards enjoying it all the more through the peace of mind it brings about.

Travelling abroad with travel insurance

By Mui Aponta

Going away on holiday can sometimes be quite a stressful experience. For example, there are all the things you need to sort out before going away such as putting cats and dogs into a cattery or kennels; organising transport to the airport; making sure that you have remembered to bring all the relevant clothing; and of course actually being able to catch the flight.

It therefore makes sense to have everything organised and ready for when you leave, and that includes travel insurance. While it is often seen as unnecessary and a grudging expense, it really can pay for itself in so many ways ? top of the list being peace of mind.

Remember that while you might be able to buy single trip travel insurance from as little as ?5, the cheapest policies are more often than not terribly good in terms of what they actually cover. For people looking to gain extra assurance that if for example their flights are cancelled at short notice or even that the holiday company fails, they might not be able to reclaim any money through such a basic policy.

To this end, most insurance policies in whatever form ? travel, car or house for example ? have an ‘excess’ amount that has to be paid if any type of claim is made. For such a cheap travel insurance policy as the one costing ?6, this excess amount could be as much as up to ?200, and may not even make it worth claiming on. Going for a policy costing a little more means that the excess is reduced to say ?50.

Some travel insurance policies will cover you for the additional extras that might not normally be something you think of. These could include things such as if having put your cat or dog into a cattery or kennels for the holiday, and you are delayed in your return due to flight cancellations and the like, the travel insurance policy will pay out to cover those extra fees. This is definitely worth considering.

Other handy features in a travel insurance policy to look out for are ‘holiday guard’ cover. This basically means that in the event you need to claim on your home or car insurance while away ? for example having suffered burst pipes or your car gets stolen or damaged, the travel insurance policy will pay up to a certain level excess due on that policy.

Aside from these matters, travel insurance should naturally cover you for any unexpected medical and accident expenses. In a foreign country, you may not be eligible for free healthcare under their system ? the European Health Insurance Card only gives you certain benefits equivalent to basic care ? and if you do fall ill abroad the last thing you want is to worry about how your medical bills will be paid.

Being covered by a good policy is worth everything you pay for it ? and more. This is not just in purely financial terms but for the peace of mind such a policy brings, knowing that you can go out and enjoy yourself in whatever you get up to.
